Brand Guidelines: The Complete Guide for a Startup
Why every startup needs brand guidelines
Brand guidelines are the document that guarantees your brand's visual consistency across every medium. Without them, your website uses one color, your social media another, and your presentations a third. The result: a brand that looks unprofessional and hard to remember.
For a startup, brand guidelines are all the more critical because they carry your credibility with investors, partners and early customers.
The 6 elements of a set of brand guidelines
1. The logo (and its variants)
Document: the primary logo, the monochrome version (black/white), the negative version (on dark backgrounds), the logomark on its own (icon without text), and the usage rules (minimum size, clear space).
2. The color palette
Define 3 to 5 colors maximum:
- Primary color: the most used one, your brand's color
- Secondary color: for accents and CTAs
- Neutral colors: white, grey and black for backgrounds and text
For each color, record the HEX (web), RGB (screen) and CMYK (print) values.
3. Typography
2 typefaces are enough: one for headings (impact, personality) and one for body copy (legibility). Prefer Google Fonts (free) such as Inter, Plus Jakarta Sans, or Outfit for tech startups.
4. Iconography
Define a consistent icon style (filled, stroked, outline) and a reference library (Lucide, Heroicons, Phosphor). Consistent icons reinforce visual unity.
5. Layout rules
Define your typical spacing, margins and grids. That lets anyone (a supplier, a future employee) create compliant visuals without having to ask you.
6. Visual tone (photography style)
What style of photography matches your brand? White studio, lifestyle, illustration, flat design? A consistent direction strengthens your identity.
