Creating a Restaurant Logo: 5 Essential Elements
Why a restaurant's logo is different from the rest
A restaurant logo is subject to specific constraints: it has to work on an illuminated sign, on a laminated menu, on takeaway packaging, on TripAdvisor/Google Maps, and on social media. It is one of the most versatile logos to design.
It also has to trigger an immediate emotional reaction: hunger, conviviality, trust, the urge to come in. Good restaurant logos do that in under 2 seconds.
Element 1: Colors that stimulate appetite
It is not a myth: some colors genuinely stimulate appetite and the warmth associated with food service.
- Red and orange: stimulate appetite, create urgency and warmth (McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut)
- Yellow and gold: conviviality, generosity, good mood
- Green: freshness, healthy cooking, local, organic
- Burgundy and terracotta: fine dining, authenticity, Mediterranean warmth
- Black and gold: fine-dining restaurant, prestige, luxury
To avoid for a restaurant: blue (a natural appetite suppressant) and cold tones (steel grey, pure white with no warm accent).
Element 2: Typography that matches your positioning
Your logo's typeface communicates as much as the colors:
- Classic serif (Garamond, Times) → traditional restaurant, brasserie, bistro
- Script/handwritten → family restaurant, homemade, artisanal
- Modern sans-serif → food truck, burgers, street food, on-trend
- Fine, elegant serif → fine dining, starred restaurant
Element 3: An icon that gives context without clichés
The most common "restaurant" icons are also the most ordinary: crossed knife and fork, a plate, a chef's hat. If you use them, make sure they are treated distinctively enough.
More original approaches:
- A signature ingredient from your cooking (a basil leaf for Italian, a cocoa bean for a chocolatier)
- The architecture or a detail of your space (an arch, a window)
- The restaurant's stylized initials
- A geographical element (if your name refers to one)
Element 4: Legibility at every size
Test your logo in these real-world contexts before approving it:
- Illuminated sign (seen from a distance) → 5-metre size, dark background
- Google Maps/TripAdvisor thumbnail → 40×40px
- Stamp on paper packaging → monochrome, 3cm
- Website header → 200px wide
- Instagram profile picture → 150×150px circle
Element 5: Consistency with the food you serve
A sushi bar logo does not use the same codes as a Texan barbecue logo or a French pâtisserie logo. Your logo has to hint at the kind of cooking before the customer even reads the name. That is achievable with the right combination of colors, typography and icon.
