Is your AI logo a real vector SVG? 7 checks
Receiving a .svg file is not proof that your logo consists of editable vector shapes. Here's how to tell a true vector design from a bitmap wrapped in SVG.

1. Understand the container
SVG is a document format capable of describing paths, basic shapes and text. It can also hold an embedded bitmap using an image element. The file extension alone proves little.
A vector design retains smooth geometry when scaled, but it can still be poorly constructed: overly complex paths and closed letter counters make later editing difficult.
2. Inspect the source
Open a copy of the SVG in a plain text editor. Elements such as path, rect, circle and polygon describe vector shapes. An image element containing a long base64 string may mean a bitmap is embedded.
An image element is not always a defect in composite artwork, but it is worth questioning when a seller promises a fully vector logo.
3. Open and edit the shapes
Use a vector editor to select individual shapes. Try changing the symbol color without editing the entire image. Check the holes in letters such as O, A, B and R.
Look for a permanently baked-in white background when you expected transparency. A file can be perfectly valid SVG and still be awkward to reuse.
- Clean edges at high zoom
- Selectable and recolorable shapes
- Appropriate separation of symbol and wordmark
- No stretching when resized
4. Test the smallest version
A beautiful but complex symbol may disappear at favicon size. Check it in a small square and reduce detail when necessary.
Also try monochrome and reversed versions. Embossing, stamps and embroidery often demand a simpler treatment than a glossy screen preview.
5. Check the deliverable and rights
Confirm which files arrive after purchase, whether the chosen design remains faithful to the approved concept, and what commercial rights the offer grants.
BrandMotion Lab works with SVG concepts and offer-specific downloads. Opening and inspecting the delivered file is stronger evidence than a broad marketing statement.
6 and 7. Prepare print, archive the master
Ask your printer whether they accept SVG or require PDF or EPS. Check line weight, fonts, scale and color requirements before production.
Keep the unmodified original, the approved version and output formats separately. Missing fonts can affect rendering unless they are handled according to the printer's instructions.
Methods and file formats are explained here; always check current vendor offers and technical requirements.
